Optimizing snake locomotion on an inclined plane.
We develop a model to study the locomotion of snakes on inclined planes. We determine numerically which snake motions are optimal for two retrograde traveling-wave body shapes, triangular and sinusoidal waves, across a wide range of frictional parameters and incline angles. In the regime of large transverse friction coefficients, we find power-law scalings for the optimal wave amplitudes and co...
متن کاملAn improved method for the solution of the problem of location on an inclined plane
— A method for solving the problem of minimizing the work expended in sliding blocks along an inclined plane to a central location is considered. Significant improvement in the itérative procedure is offered in cases where the centroid does not coïncide with a demand point. Also, an alternative to the itérative procedure is suggested for cases of such coïncidence. This approach adds an insight ...
متن کاملAn exact plane-fronted wave solution in metric-affine gravity
We study plane–fronted electrovacuum waves in metric–affine gravity (MAG) with cosmological constant in the triplet ansatz sector of the theory. Their field strengths are, on the gravitational side, curvature Rα , nonmetricity Qαβ , torsion T α and, on the matter side, the electromagnetic field strength F . Here we basically present, after a short introduction into MAG and its triplet subcase, ...
متن کاملUnsteady granular flows down an inclined plane.
The continuum description of granular flows is still a challenge despite their importance in many geophysical and industrial applications. We extend previous works, which have explored steady flow properties, by focusing on unsteady flows accelerating or decelerating down an inclined plane in the simple shear configuration. We solve the flow kinematics analytically, including predictions of evo...
متن کاملLiquid Drops sliding down an inclined plane
We investigate a one-dimensional model describing the motion of liquid drops sliding down an inclined plane (the so-called quasi-static approximation model). We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution and investigate its long time behavior for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous medium (i.e. constant and non-constant contact angle). We also obtain some homogenization results.
